Aston Villa handed Champions League ‘boost’ after significant new PSR update

Aston Villa have been handed a “positive boost” to their top four hopes after a significant PSR update emerged, according to football finance expert Dan Plumley.

The Villans have revealed that they were only a matter of hours away from being slapped with a 10-point deduction before Douglas Luiz completed his transfer to Juventus [Daily Mail, 3 September].

Luiz’s move to Turin ensured that Unai Emery’s side complied with financial fair play regulations and Plumley believes the move will have helped Villa’s hopes of qualifying for the Champions League once again.

“It’s really significant,” he exclusively told Villa News.

“We saw a lot of movement in and around that 30 June date with a lot of clubs where we thought they were close to the margins and we’ve probably now been proven correct on that one.

“For Villa in particular, if there were to be rumours of a 10-point deduction, it’s a huge positive for them on the pitch this season that they’ve not got to deal with that.

“They’re back in the Champions League, back in Europe, can you repeat the trick? That’s the next phase for them now.

“Can they finish in the top four again this season? Whether they can or not remains to be seen but if they’d been starting with a 10-point deduction this season it was going to be a big ask to get even into the European places I would say.

“So it’s really significant, particularly if it was that particular sale that managed to help them out and alleviate the concerns and meant no 10-point deduction.

“That’s a really positive boost for the club and stands up against what we saw at the time when a lot of clubs were doing deals to help out the PSR calculation.”

Have Aston Villa complied with PSR or could they get a point deduction?

Losing Luiz will have been a blow to Emery’s side on the pitch this season, but it will have been a price worth paying if it means that they are still able to compete at the top end of the Premier League table.

There is still a lot of work to be done on the field before the Villans can begin thinking about another year of Champions League football, however, the early signs suggest Villa will be there or there about again.
