Aston Villa v Wolves player ratings – Diego Carlos struggles, Ezri Konsa shines
Aston Villa and Wolves shared the spoils at Villa Park on Saturday, 21 September, playing out a 1-1 draw.
Matheus Cunha opened the scoring for Wolves, capitalising on an error from Diego Carlos in the defensive third.
Ollie Watkins scored the equaliser in the second half as Villa looked to force the initiative and claw their way back into the game.
Here are our player ratings for the game:
Emi Martinez – 6
According to Sofascore, the Argentina goalkeeper made three saves in the game and it was a decent outing for him at Villa Park. There was not much he could’ve done to prevent the goal from going in as it was an individual error. He was also tidy in possession as he helped the side build out from the back.
Ezri Konsa – 8
Scored the winning goal, not something that he would’ve expected but definitely one he’ll be remembering for a long time. Timed his run perfectly and took advantage of Mario Lemina switching off. In many ways, it was characteristic of a poacher’s finish. He was also exceptional with his passing, with an accuracy of 96 per cent and he won four out of six of his attempted ground duels.
Diego Carlos puts Aston Villa in jeopardy in the first half
Diego Carlos – 3
Made a catastrophic error in the first half which handed the hosts the opening goal of the contest. He struggled to impose himself in the first 45 minutes and Emery certainly will have had a word with him at half-time. He failed to win a single tackle all game and lost possession on eight occasions and had only a 50 per cent accuracy with his long passes.

Pau Torres – 6
Picked up a yellow card and had a few lapses defensively but in possession, he was near perfect and an important asset building out from the back. The Spaniard had a pass accuracy north of 90 per cent and had a decent accuracy rate of 66 per cent with his long passes as well.
Lucas Digne – 4
Played one half of the game and struggled to get involved or make a telling difference for the hosts. He had a zero per cent accuracy rate as both of his crosses were misplaced and he also lost possession on five occasions. He even lost half the aerial and ground duels he attempted and it was an underwhelming display overall for the Frenchman.
Amadou Onana – 6
The Belgian was tidy in possession, achieving a pass accuracy of 88 per cent. He even won the majority of his ground duels, but was bullied in the air – managing to win just 25 per cent of his aerial duels.
Youri Tielemans – 7
Was all over the place on Saturday, making lives difficult for the Wolves players. He got the assist he deserved but even apart from that, he did so much for his side. He created two big chances from midfield and also won seven out of 12 ground duels. The Belgian also won three tackles in what was an all-action display for him.
John McGinn – 4
Struggled to get involved in proceedings in the first half and had to be taken off due to an injury. He could only complete 12 passes in the time he was on the field of play and even lost his only attempted aerial duel. He also offered little to nothing without the ball.
Morgan Rogers – 6
Made that diagonal run into the channel and played an inch-perfect pass to Jhon Duran who made it 3-1. Before the goal, he was struggling off the ball, losing 10 out of his 12 attempted ground duels, but when the time came, he rose up to the occasion to provide the magical touch.
Jacob Ramsey – 7
Was sharp in the final third and always looked to make things happen from the left wing. He had a 100 per cent success rate with his dribbles and also won all four of his ground duels. It was an impressive performance on and off the ball – something Emery will appreciate.
Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins gets his much-deserved goal
Ollie Watkins – 7
Appeared to be working hard all game and finally got his reward in the 73rd minute of the contest when he scored the equaliser. Completed just nine passes all game but it was more about how much he could offer off the ball and what he could do when he found himself in a goal-scoring position. Solid effort from the Englishman.
