Lamare Bogarde not ready for Aston Villa after what happened vs Young Boys
Unai Emery had little to complain about as Aston Villa claimed their first Champions League victory with a 3-0 win against Young Boys.
Goals from Youri Tielemans, Aaron Ramsey and Amadou Onana helped seal the three points on Tuesday (17 September), though without intervention from VAR, it could have been an even better night for the Premier League side.
Given the impressive performance in Switzerland, it seems difficult to pick out any negatives from the clash, but Lamare Bogarde’s struggles will have put a slight downer on the result.
The 20-year-old full-back, who has been filling in for the injured Matty Cash, was replaced by Diego Carlos at half-time as he was quite simply unable to deal with Ebrima Colley down the right flank.
Bogarde clearly still has a lot to learn, having made just his fourth senior appearance in a Villa shirt, and Emery must remain patient after his performance in the Champions League.
Lamare Bogarde out-of-depth in Aston Villa win v Young Boys
Up against one of Young Boys’ threatening wingers, Bogarde was cut off from the rest of his teammates, taking just 18 touches despite an overall dominant performance from the Villans [FotMob].
He won just 33 per cent of his tackles, won 50 per cent of his ground duels and committed two fouls before being hooked during the half-time break. It was a difficult night for the youngster.
Luckily for Emery, he has choices at right-back, even with Matty Cash out injured. Kosta Nedeljkovic, 18, has impressed since arriving at Villa Park, having his best performance against Arsenal.
The young full-back completed 89 per cent of his passes, completed 60 per cent of his tackles (3/5), and won 75 per cent of his ground duels (6/8), coming up against Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard [FotMob].

It is extremely difficult to fill the boots of Cash, especially when it comes to the attacking side of the game, with the Poland international ranking in the top 88 and 75 percentiles for total shots and progressive carries respectively for full-backs across Europe’s top five leagues [FBref].
Bogarde is, undoubtedly, an exciting talent at Emery’s disposal, but he needs more time to develop before becoming a regular for Villa. That was made clear in the Champions League.
