Youri Tielemans shines in 9/10, Bogarde only let-down – Aston Villa player ratings v Young Boys
Aston Villa started their Champions League campaign with a superb 3-0 win against Young Boys on Tuesday (17 September).
The Villans opened the scoring through Youri Tielemans after spending the opening stages under pressure.
Unai Emery’s side were unstoppable from that moment on with academy product Jacob Ramsey scoring a bizarre second just 11 minutes later.
Ollie Watkins thought he had smashed home Villa’s third before his strike was ruled out for a very harsh handball.
Jhon Duran thought he had yet another goal off the bench before the referee called it back for an Amadou Onana handball inside his own half.
The Belgian did make it 3-0 just minutes later with a powerful drive from distance into the bottom corner, giving David von Ballmoos no chance.
Here’s how Villa News rated each player out of 10 in Berne, with all stats from FotMob.
Emi Martinez – 7
After Villa’s opening goal, there was very little for the Argentine to do. The 32-year-old still had his say with three saves and one punch to keep his side in the game. Without his early intervention, it could have been a different game entirely.
Lamare Bogarde – 4
It almost says it all that the 20-year-old was hooked at half time by Emery. It wasn’t a necessarily poor performance but the home side certainly targeted Bogarde. With a 33 per cent tackle success rate and two fouls given away, the Dutchman certainly struggled throughout his 45 minute showing.
Ezri Konsa – 6
A steady showing from the 26-year-old. As usual was tidy on the ball with an 97 per cent accuracy across his 37 completed passes. The England international didn’t have much to do so can be pleased with his night’s work and a clean sheet.
Pau Torres – 6
A similar story to his centre defensive partner. The Spaniard had 50 touches throughout and was also positive on the ball with an 88 per cent completion rate. Nothing amazing but a clean sheet nonetheless.
Lucas Digne – 7
The France international has been in great form to start the season and carried it on against Young Boys. He would have been happy with a 75 per cent long ball success
John McGinn – 7
A positive showing from the captain once again. His assist for the opening goal was pinpoint and got the Villans on the right track from the off. From the Championship to the Champions League, top showing from McGinn once again.
Amadou Onana – 7
Another quiet night for the Belgian was lit up with a superb long range strike into the bottom corner. He was very unfortunate to have been penalised for handball on Duran’s goal. Yet another goal for the former Everton man.
Youri Tielemans and Jacob Ramsey shine for Aston Villa v Young Boys
Youri Tielemans – 9
The Belgian international was superb for the Villans, showing his class in a MOTM performance. He set the standards with his opener and his overall showing. This saw him keep up a 93 per cent pass accuracy across his 71 touches. A great start to life back on Europe’s elite stage for Tielemans.
Jacob Ramsey – 8
It will mean the world to Jacob Ramsey that he has gotten on the scoresheet for Aston Villa in the Champions League. It was by no means a thing of beauty but a goal is a goal. The 23-year-old was much improved from the Everton game with a 100 per cent dribble success rate. Much more like himself.
Morgan Rogers – 8
It doesn’t come as a surprise to fans anymore just how good Morgan Rogers is. The 22-year-old created three chances completed four dribbles and had 11 touches in the Young Boys penalty area. There was a lot to like about Rogers’ performance as he just continues to get better and better.
Ollie Watkins – 7
The England international will be aggrieved to have not been on the scoresheet after his goal was ruled out. His performance deserved a goal as Watkins looked to be back to his best. Supporters will hope that the 28-year-old is ok after being spotted with ice on his Achilles after being taken off.
