Amadou Onana almost cost Aston Villa with woeful display v Everton

Amadou Onana almost cost Aston Villa after gifting away a goal in their 3-2 win over Everton at Villa Park on Saturday (14 September).

The midfielder was at fault for Dwight McNeil’s opener, losing the ball in dramatic fashion and seemingly faking an injury out of embarrassment.

Manager Unai Emery opted to replace the Belgian at half-time and his plans worked, as Villa went on to win the game without Onana in their midfield.

Despite positive displays this season for the Villans, the 23-year-old will need to improve on his performance against the Toffees if he is to feature in Villa’s Champions League campaign.

Onana has come into the Midlands side with some solid showings against Leicester City and West Ham but will want to move on from his performance against the Toffees.

The midfielder ranks in the top 97 percentile for aerial duels won in the Premier League, according to Fotmob, yet only managed to win 67 per cent against Sean Dyche’s men.

While he completed 100 per cent of his tackles in the match, Onana was dispossessed once, which led to a goal for his former side.

The Villa man also managed 82 per cent of his passes, misplacing five of 32, which is lower than every other match he has featured in for his new club, averaging over 90 per cent in those games.

Though he only featured for half of the match, this is below par for Onana and a far cry from the performances he has in his locker.

Villa’s Belgian star will be desperate to right his wrongs in their next match, as they travel to Switzerland to face Young Boys in the Champions League on Tuesday (17 September), though Emery may decide on rotating the squad.
