Amadou Onana outshines Aston Villa teammate Youri Tielemans for Belgium in France defeat

Aston Villa star Amadou Onana outshone Youri Tielemans for Belgium in their defeat to France on Monday 9 September.

The Red Devils suffered their first defeat of the new Nations League campaign in a 2-0 loss away to Didier Deschamps’ side.

Goals from Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele were enough for the home side to secure all three points against Domenico Tedesco’s men.

The manager lined up his squad with the Villa duo starting in the centre with Onana performing at a higher level than his compatriot.

Against the mite of the France national side, the defensive side of his game was always going to be important and this is where he proved his metal.

The former Everton star kept up a 100 per cent tackle success rate while making six defensive actions throughout his 90-minute showing.

Onana was solid in the middle of the park which saw him lose just one of his seven duels, keeping up an 85 per cent win rate.

This outshone his midfield partner who kept up just 33 per cent duel success, losing four duels in the process.

It was always going to be tough for the 27-year-old who performs best when he can get on the ball and pick a pass, but the ex-Leicester star wasn’t afforded that time against France.

In a return to Premier League action, the Villa supporters will be eager to see the duo return to their best in claret and blue.
