Unai Emery misses out on Aston Villa signings amid financial developments
Dan Bardell thinks Unai Emery would have wanted more signings at Aston Villa over the summer but has been hampered by PSR restrictions.
The Villans were forced into selling Douglas Luiz early in the window with Damian Vidagany confirming via The Daily Mail reported on 3 September that they would faced a 10-point deduction if they had breached the Premier League’s PSR regulations before June 30.
This saw business conducted early on with the final deal of the transfer window being on 22 July, 39 days before the end of the window.
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell believes Emery would have wanted more additions but was hamstrung by financial restrictions.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “I’m sure that Emery would have liked one or two more but unfortunately the financial landscape at the club means that’s not possible.
“The people at the club know what they are doing and if they could have been active they would have been.
“Emery has shown before that he doesn’t need a load of signings to get the best out of a club and I’m sure he’ll do the same. Some people with the window but Villa will be fine.“
Aston Villa narrowly avoid PSR points deduction
The Villans had a positive transfer window overall despite the obvious frustration from moving Luiz on to Juventus to begin the window.
The club’s business was completed quickly to bring in the likes of Onana and Ian Maatsen who, in particular, improved the squad available to Emery.
Deals to bring in squad players like Ross Barkley and Jaden Philogene are a plus and certainly are making the side better than it was last campaign.
The PSR restrictions are there and the punishments are real, the club have to be clever and they have been so far.

Emery may be frustrated with the window as a whole but has shown over recent years that he can get a lot out of lesser squads which he will look to do once again.
