Dominic Calvert-Lewin transfer to Aston Villa rated on Deadline Day amid Everton talk
Dan Bardell sees merit in Aston Villa signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a plan B to Ollie Watkins for a cheap fee on Deadline Day.
A report from CaughtOffside on 27 August suggested that the 27-year-old has been discussed internally as a striker option by the Villans.
The Villans face a late race to sign the Englishman before the 30 August deadline if they are to bring him in from Goodison Park.
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell believes that if a cheap deal can be struck, the Toffees’ forward would be a positive addition despite his injury concerns.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “It isn’t a deal that I can see happening but I can see the merit with him being someone a bit different.
“I can see the attraction for Calvert-Lewin as a plan B option. His injury record would always concern me. He had a decent run of fitness towards the end of last season but other than that he’s had rotten luck with injury.
“If he was willing to come in as a number two and compete then it would be a good pick up if it was a modest fee.
“If Everton wants a larger deal, considering he’s going to be second to Watkins, then I can’t see it happening.“
Aston Villa interested in Dominic Calvert-Lewin from Everton
Unai Emery has some top number nine options available to him at Villa Park but one more would certainly be a useful addition.
Watkins is one of the best forwards in the Premier League while Jhon Duran has great potential which makes him a positive asset.
Nicholas Jackson has also been linked [CaughtOffside] but wouldn’t add the same characteristics as the Everton man.
Calvert-Lewin could come in as a second or third-choice striker for the Villans and provide a point of difference for the campaign.
The former England international is physical and is a positive force in the air when linking up play and scoring goals from crosses.

It is unclear as to how much he would cost but with a year remaining on his contract, a cheaper deal could be struck before the 30 August deadline.
