Aston Villa call out Premier League ahead of August 30 transfer deadline

Dan Plumley has insisted that Aston Villa’s director of football operations Damian Vidagany has effectively called out the Premier League.

Vidagany insisted on talkSPORT [14 August] that the Villans are trying to break into the elite clubs in the Premier League, but the PSR system is not allowing them.

The football finance expert admitted it was a “big statement” but he could understand where Villa are coming from, as they will feel aggrieved if they have money there to spend before the August 30 deadline.

“It’s a big statement in a sense that you are pretty much calling out the league that sets the regulations that you are part of,” he exclusively told Villa News.

“In terms of what he perhaps defines the spirit of football as is a little bit vague, but I’ve been involved in plenty of research in this space that does suggest that FFP wider has some unintended consequences and some of those are that you do create barriers to entry or you stop other clubs catching the super elite in this case.

That’s where Villa will feel a bit aggrieved if they have money to spend or the owners have money to invest and they can’t do that.

It is a really tricky one to balance because you have got the other side of the coin and it goes back to that point of what do we want from the leagues and the clubs?

Do we want collective action or do we want vested self-interest? It’s not an easy one but you can understand where Villa are coming from.”

Aston Villa call out Premier League?

This was a bold statement to make from Vidagany, with NSWE known to have big money to spend, if they can do it without breaking regulations.

Unfortunately, without sales on top of that, clubs cannot justify spending consistently and that is something that is only going to continue.
