Aston Villa backed to sign Lutsharel Geertruida in last-gasp transfer amid £30m update
Bryan King has backed Aston Villa to complete the signing of Lutsharel Geertruida before the transfer window closes on Friday (30 August).
The ex-Villa scout claims that Unai Emery will need “two quality players in each position” as he prepares to lead his side into the UEFA Champions League.
As reported by The Telegraph (28 August), Villa are looking to raise funds to complete a £30million deal for Feyenoord defender Geertruida.
And King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – thinks the right-back could prove very useful at the club.
“This signing would make sense,” King said.
“The Champions League will be starting within the month. As a result, Emery needs players who are fit and ready for that competition.
“All the top clubs have two quality players in each position. Therefore, I think Villa need to start thinking in that way. It has been a long time since the club have been in the Champions League.
“There are going to be at least two games a week, at a high level. As a result, Villa will need quality players to handle that.”
Aston Villa to sign Lutsharel Geertruida from Feyenoord?
Matty Cash recently picked up a hamstring injury and is set for a month on the sidelines as a result (via The Athletic, 26 August). Therefore, bringing in a brand-new full-back could be important for Emery.
While Geertruida mainly operates as a right-back, he can also play as a centre-back and in defensive midfield.
That versatility could be key for Emery as he looks to manage his squad throughout a busy season.

Therefore, the Spaniard will be hoping that the club can get a deal across the line for Geertruida before the transfer window slams shut on Friday (30 August).
