Fabrizio Romano shares option update on Samuel Illing-Junior as Aston Villa exit nears

Samuel Iling-Junior will join Bologna on a straight loan deal from Aston Villa with no option to buy, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The renowned transfer journalist posted on X [24 August] to report that it will just be a temporary move to take Iling-Junior back to Italy for a season, and that Bologna will cover the winger’s salary until June.

The 20-year-old joined Villa from Juventus in July after four years in Turin as part of the Douglas Luiz departure, which followed his progression through the Chelsea youth ranks.

Romano shared: “Bologna will cover Samuel Iling-Junior’s salary until June and there will be NO buy option included.

“Straight loan from Aston Villa, confirmed.”

Iling-Junior to return to Italy from Aston Villa

Aston Villa will be wanting assurances that Iling-Junior will receive plenty of game time at Bologna, which seems an attractive destination for a player this season.

Despite losing some of their talent, including Arsenal’s new signing Riccardo Calafiori, the Serie A outfit will compete in this season’s Champions League.

Iling-Junior will be suited to the Italian game, having experienced it for four years as a youngster having come through the Cobham academy setup whilst with Chelsea.

With 45 appearances for Juve – including 27 in Serie A last term – it appears to be a deal which suits all parties.

Lewis Dobbin is another player in Iling-Junior’s position, of a similar age profile, who was signed and then immediately loaned out, on this occasion to West Brom, as Unai Emery seeks external development for his fringe players.
