Amadou Onana adds threat to already ‘dangerous’ Aston Villa after West Ham debut
Dan Bardell believes Amadou Onana will make Aston Villa even better from set pieces after scoring on his debut against West Ham.
The Belgian international joined the Villans from Everton earlier in the summer for a club record £50million fee [Sky Sports].
The 23-year-old repaid the faith shown in him just four minutes into his debut with a header from a trademark Austin MacPhee set piece.
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell thinks Unai Emery’s side will be even better from dead-ball situations than they already were with Onana in the side.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “Villa have been very good at set pieces anyway.
“Their record last season was absolutely brilliant and I was really impressed with the inventive set plays that they came up with. Even when they weren’t scoring they were dangerous.
“I think what Onana gives Villa is that he is the main target now because he’s a huge guy and possesses real aerial ability.
“I would expect Onana to be very dangerous from set pieces, he’s off the mark already, confidence is high, so he’s going to be a threat this season.“
Amadou Onana adds set piece threat to Aston Villa
It felt like the end of the world for Villa supporters when Douglas Luiz confirmed a move away to Juventus to begin the transfer window.
Just one game into the new Premier League campaign and any fears have gone away after the performance of Onana against the Hammers.
The Belgian was one of the best players on the pitch and showed his new fans exactly what he’s all about.
An all-action performance was only made better by his early goal which set piece coach MacPhee was visibly pleased with on the sidelines.
Standing at nearly six foot five, it is no surprise that the former Lille starlet is the target from corners which caused massive problems for Alphonse Areola.
With him showing his ability and impact in the opening game, there is reason to be excited about what he can do for the rest of the season.
