Aston Villa to consider Àlex Moreno sale amid Lucas Digne exit development
Noel Egan is keen for Aston Villa to keep hold of exit-linked defender Lucas Digne.
The ex-FIFA official and lifetime Villa supporter believes that the Frenchman was the club’s best left-back during the 2023/24 campaign.
As reported by The Athletic (7 August), Digne has rejected a proposal to join Galatasaray.
And Egan – speaking exclusively to Villa News – claims keeping hold of the 31-year-old would be wise.
“Absolutely I would prefer Digne to remain at the club,” Egan said.
“There was talk this time last year of him leaving because we had brought in Àlex Moreno. However, he stood his ground, and he was by far the best left-back we had last season.
“I am delighted to see that he has rejected Galatasaray, and of course, we have Ian Maatsen now. With the amount of games Villa have next season, it would be good to keep Digne.
“On his day he is a very good player and he is better defensively than Moreno. As a result, I could see the club selling Moreno before they sold Digne.”
Aston Villa to sell Àlex Moreno instead of Lucas Digne?
It seems as though Moreno and Digne will be battling for the backup left-back spot at Villa Park.
Unai Emery often rotated his full-backs last season. However, considering the amount of money which was spent to bring Maatsen to the club, the 22-year-old is likely to start most games for Villa.

Having three left-backs in the squad seems slightly excessive, which would suggest that one of Moreno or Digne will need to be sold before the transfer deadline.
