Aston Villa Women agree terms to sign Sabrina D’Angelo after Arsenal exit

Aston Villa Women have confirmed the signing of former Arsenal goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo following her exit from the North London club.

The confirmation (AVFC, 31 July) notes that she has signed a two-year deal off the back of her 18-month deal with the Gunners coming to an end. She is currently away with the Canadian national team for the Summer Olympics in Paris.

It comes two months after this exact deal was predicted to take place, seeing Daphne van Domselaar go in the opposite direction (Emma Sanders, 15 May).

Aston Villa are pushing hard this summer

It was always going to be tough to replace van Domselaar but for manager Robert de Pauw, this is something he likely anticipated when he was first appointed last month. The real story here is that this is already the gaffer’s fourth signing of the transfer window, and it certainly doesn’t feel like it’ll be his last.

For Aston Villa, last season was full of inconsistencies. They finished in seventh place in the Women’s Super League and although they had a promising League Cup run, it felt like they had a squad that couldn’t quite make the move to the next level.

They have Rachel Daly leading the line superbly in the final third but this is the kind of defensive move that was needed. With a goal difference of -16 in the league, they’ll be desperate to see improvements – and that’s what D’Angelo hopes to bring to the table.

In other Aston Villa news, Jill Baihings was announced as the club’s first summer signing.
