Aston Villa told to ‘go and get’ Julian Alvarez as new Manchester City exit update emerges
Alan Hutton has told Aston Villa to “go and get” Julian Alvarez after an update emerged about his future at Manchester City this summer.
The Villans were eager to sign the Argentinian World Cup winner during his time at River Plate, with reports suggesting they were the frontrunners to secure his signature [Calcio Mercato, 26 October 2021].
Although the Premier League champions don’t want to sell the 24-year-old and plan to hold new talks with the striker about his future, Alvarez wants to play more regular first-team football next season [Fabrizio Romano, 14 July].
Although Hutton admits he would be “very surprised” to see Pep Guardiola’s side part ways with the former River Plate man, he believes he would help take Villa to the “next level” ahead of their Champions League campaign.
“Go and get him,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.
“He’s an outstanding talent and he’d play for most teams every single week but unfortunately when you’re at such a big team with amazing players everywhere you look around you it’s going to be difficult.
“Credit to him, whenever he’s been called upon he’s been absolutely outstanding.
“If the rumours are true, I would love to see somebody like that at Villa Park and he’d bring the level of the squad up.
“Especially going into the Champions League and fighting again for the top four, you’re going to need players like that and he’s the kind of guy who takes you to the next level.
“Would it happen? I’m not too sure. I’d be very surprised if Manchester City let him go but in football, you never know.”
Will Julian Alvarez exit Manchester City amid Aston Villa transfer speculation?
Villa have already spent heavily this summer on stars like Jaden Philogene and Amadou Onana, but that was always going to be the case as they look to take the next steps under Unai Emery after qualifying for the Champions League.
The gap between the Premier League and Europe’s premier competition is big and to make that step confidently, the Villans were always going to need a couple of high-profile additions.
Alvarez would fit that model as he would not only offer some support for Ollie Watkins in the final third but also add an extra cutting edge to Villa’s attack that has perhaps been lacking in the past.
Whether a deal can be completed will entirely depend on whether or not City are willing to sanction the 24-year-old’s exit and what sort of fee they’re looking for.
But if Villa can afford it, they would be stupid to not consider a move.
