Moussa Diaby agrees terms to quit Aston Villa as ‘crazy’ £50m transfer update emerges
Bryan King cannot believe that Moussa Diaby is already on the verge of quitting Aston Villa.
The ex-Villa scout has been left stunned that the 25-year-old could leave after just one season at the club.
As reported by Gianluigi Longari via X (11 July), Diaby has agreed personal terms with Al-Ittihad, with the Saudi Arabian club prepared to pay £51.5million to sign the forward.
And King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – can’t understand why the Frenchman is worth so much.
“I’m surprised that the club are already willing to let him go,” King said.
“It would be crazy to see him leave after one season, you would have thought this was a long-term investment.
“He clearly hasn’t proven that he is good enough. For the kind of money he was signed for I think people would have expected more.
“If the club can get their money back on him then well done Villa. I can’t believe he is worth £50million.”
Moussa Diaby prepared to quit life under Unai Emery at Aston Villa to join Al-Ittihad
Diaby played in all 38 Premier League matches last season, scoring six goals and providing eight assists.
That isn’t a bad return at all. However, after joining the club from Bayer Leverkusen in a club-record £51.9million deal (via The Guardian, 22 July 2023), supporters might have been hopeful of a bit more.
While plenty of people would have most likely been prepared to give the winger another season to develop, if the club can get their money back on him, it might not be the worst idea.
It is perhaps a shock that Diaby is prepared to leave the Premier League after just one season. However, for Villa and Unai Emery, it likely won’t be the worst thing in the long run.
