Aston Villa medical booked for Amadou Onana as £50m documents prepared

Aston Villa have booked the medical for Amadou Onana for his move from Everton, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Writing on his X account (14 July), Onana will travel to Birmingham for his medical following his holiday after featuring for Belgium at Euro 2024.

The deal will be worth £50m plus add-ons and Everton will receive a future sell-on clause for the midfielder.

Onana will replace Douglas Luiz who left for Juventus, in a deal that saw Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea move the other way (Sky Sports, 30 June).

Aston Villa prepare for Champions League football next season

The 22-year-old is the third player to move between Aston Villa and Everton this summer.

The Villains completed the signing of striker Lewis Dobbin, whilst 21-year-old midfielder Tim Iroegbunam made the switch to Goodison Park.

Both clubs needed to sell before 30 June to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

The sale of Luiz helped their financial situation and now Unai Emery is ready to build a side capable of competing in this season’s Champions League.

Onana made 72 Premier League appearances and scored four goals since his move to Everton from Lille in 2022.

He was impressive for Belgium at Euro 2024, he started all four matches before their elimination by France in the round of 16.

Villa have been active in the transfer market and have already completed the signing of Ian Matsen from Chelsea (Sky Sports, 28 June), and have triggered their matching rights option to re-sign Jaden Philogene and hijack Ipswich’s move for the winger (BBC Sport, 10 July).

Onana is excellent business for the club, in a market where quality defensive midfielders are few and far between.
