Philippe Coutinho takes first step to retirement after Aston Villa development – expert
Ty Bracey believes that Philippe Coutinho could soon retire after a loan move from Aston Villa to Vasco de Gama was finalised.
The Villans announced, via X (10 July) that the Brazilian had confirmed a deal to return to the club where he made his professional debut.
This is the 32-year-old’s second loan spell in as many years after spending last season in Qatar with Al Duhail.
Villa podcaster, Bracey was surprised that a loan had been preferred but put it down to his wage demands and physical ability.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “I think a permanent deal would have made sense.
“He’s one of those players who can’t compete at the top level anymore physically. His wage is just too high for any club outside of the big five leagues and Saudi Arabia to afford.
“He might be looking at retirement in a few years so going back home is understandable. If there was nobody else willing to take him off the books then it is what it is.
“From his perspective, he’s on a big wage with Villa, why would he want to take a massive drop to move? If this is what is best for everyone then it makes sense to get done.“
Philippe Coutinho confirms Aston Villa departure
The Brazilian has failed to refind his best form ever since leaving Liverpool for Barcelona back in January 2018.
After signing on an initial loan at Villa Park, it felt as if he was going to be a star for the Villans after scoring and assisting on his debut v Manchester United.
The positivity around Coutinho tempted the Villans into signing him permanently but after scoring just one goal since, a departure makes sense.
The 32-year-old must be on high wages which have put off potential suitors from across Europe who can’t afford his demands.
A move back to Vasco makes sense from his point of view as he may prove to be a top player in the Brazilian Serie A.

The Villans wanted him off their books ahead of the new season and it seems clear that a loan was the last resort this summer.
