Calum Chambers closes in on Aston Villa exit as new medical development emerges
Calum Chambers is close to completing his Aston Villa exit as he closes in on a summer transfer to Cardiff City, according to Charlie Haffenden.
The Birmingham World journalist reported via X on Thursday (11 July) that the versatile defender has a medical scheduled with the Championship side as his time at Villa Park is set to come to an end.
Villa have been trying to get Chambers’ wage off of their books for some time now, including in the January window, despite the fact Unai Emery is known to be an admirer of the 29-year-old’s work ethic.
The former Arsenal man’s exit is expected to open up some space in the Villans’ wage budget as they prepare for the remainder of the summer transfer window.

Other than a spell towards the end of last season where Emery thrust Chambers back into the starting XI, the 29-year-old has been little more than a bit-part player for the majority of his time at Villa Park.
His work ethic was always appreciated by the Spaniard and he very rarely let Villa down when he did play, but he never managed to do enough to hold down a consistent place in the starting XI week in and week out.
With Tyrone Mings set to return from injury and several new defenders being targeted, it seems unlikely the former England international would have been able to become a regular starter at centre-back next term.
At right-back, Emery prefers to use a combination of Ezri Konsa and Matty Cash and unless big offers come in for either defender, it was unlikely Chambers would have climbed up the pecking order.
Ultimately, a transfer away from Villa Park is the best move for all parties. At Cardiff, he will be able to play regularly and in the Championship he will quite quickly be one of the division’s best defenders if he can stay fit and available.
Hopefully, Villa will use the money raised by his sale wisely as they look to recruit further.
