Tammy Abraham told Aston Villa transfer could reignite career

Don Goodman says talk of Roma striker Tammy Abraham potentially being on the radar of Aston Villa is an “interesting one”.

The Telegraph reported on 14 June that Villa will assess their former loanee as an option should Jhon Duran leave Villa Park this summer.

Abraham, a Champions League winner with Chelsea in 2020-21, featured just eight times for Roma in Serie A last season due to injury.

Asked if a move for Abraham is wise, Goodman told Villa News: “I don’t think Tammy Abraham would be open to playing second-fiddle given he’s still in his prime really in terms of his age. So going to a club where you will not be the main focal point, where you’ll likely play back-up, is questionable really.

“At the same time, it depends on a couple of things. Does he want to get back to the Premier League? And also, how ambitious is he? Playing in the Premier League under Unai Emery could really kickstart his career again and let him push on.

“Given the flexibility of Ollie Watkins in that he can also play in wide areas, who knows what the though process is?

“From Villa’s perspective, it’ll come down to how much it would cost to bring Tammy Abraham back to Aston Villa, and whether Unai Emery has seen enough for him to say ‘yes, I can get the best out of him’. So it’s an interesting one, but one that is difficult to quantify at the moment.”

Tammy Abraham not good enough for Aston Villa

The brutal truth is that Villa are searching for a higher quality player than Abraham at this moment in time.

And the bottom line is that Duran has more potential and value than Abraham, who had a disappointing campaign last time out.

Abraham bagged 17 goals in 37 Serie A games two seasons ago, but he has just nine goals in 46 outings since then.

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins
Ollie Watkins has been linked with a move away from Aston Villa.

Villa are effectively after a back-up striker that can occasionally fill in for Watkins, or play alongside him if a goal is needed, but Abraham is not that man.

While the 26-year-old would supposedly be open to a Villa Park return, there are better alternatives out there.
