Aston Villa in serious financial trouble amid ‘ridiculous’ Jhon Duran transfer claim
Bryan King claims Aston Villa could be in more financial trouble than supporters are being led to believe.
The ex-Villa scout can’t understand why the club were asking Chelsea to pay £40million for Jhon Duran.
As reported by Give Me Sport (24 June), the Blues have been put off by Villa’s asking price for the striker.
And King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – has suggested a reason as to why Villa might be demanding such a large fee.
“This is a player who hasn’t been playing consistently for Villa,” King said.
“It is ridiculous money. If Chelsea were paying 20 million for him, plus add-ons, then maybe that would be more sensible.
“Are Villa’s financial worries perhaps bigger than what has been stated? Based on this it seems as if they need to get some money into the club.
“However, £40million for me seems like a lot of money for a player who hasn’t yet proved himself at Villa.”
Will Jhon Duran leave Aston Villa?
If any club was to pay £40m for Duran, that would be a very strange decision.
Unai Emery’s side paid £18m to bring Duran to the West Midlands (via BBC Sport, 23 January, 2023).
In the year and a half since he joined Villa, the 20-year-old has played 49 times for the club and scored eight goals, while failing to provide an assist.
And only five of those goals have come in the Premier League. As a result, it is hard to see based on those numbers how Duran’s value has doubled since joining Villa.

Therefore, Chelsea were probably wise to be put off by Villa’s demands, and the reason why the club were charging so much remains to be seen.
In other Aston Villa news, the club would accept a “ridiculous” offer for one player amid interest from Saudi Arabia.
