Aston Villa follow Chelsea transfer blueprint as ‘clever’ verdict shared

Dan Bardell has praised Aston Villa for making a profit by selling academy talent with Lamare Bogarde the latest youngster to be linked with an exit.

The Dutchman is reportedly of interest to Nottingham Forest this summer with the Tricky Trees preparing an offer, according to a report from Birmingham Live (22 June).

This comes after the Villans sold Tim Iroegbunam to Everton in a deal that helped to alleviate concerns over the club’s Profit and Sustainability accounts.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has praised Villa for their work in the transfer window selling academy products for profit, saying it is reminiscent of the blueprint Chelsea follow.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “People are looking at this as being a bad thing but I think it is great.

It is what Chelsea have done for years in terms of signing cheap academy players, developing them, gaining them a reputation at a big club and selling them. It’s like flipping houses so I see it as a positive and clever thing.

Obviously, you want these players to come in and get into the first team but Villa have accelerated so much as a club that they aren’t going to play for the first team.

Getting a good fee and making a profit on them is an excellent business from Villa and I commend them for that.

Looking at Iroegbunam first and now potentially with Bogarde, they were brought in for so cheap and were sold for great profits. It’s smart and the way a forward-thinking and modern club works.

Lamare Bogarde set for Aston Villa exit

Bogarde, 20, looks set to depart Villa Park for Nottingham Forest after making just one appearance for the Villans since joining the academy.

This showing came against Liverpool in the FA Cup as he was joined by his academy teammates against the Reds’ first team due to Covid issues.

It is a game remembered for Louie Barry’s goal but also marked debuts for plenty of youngsters who have since left the club over the years.

Bogarde had a couple of separate loan spells with Bristol Rovers, the second of which last season didn’t pan out all too well after the sacking of Joey Barton and he was recalled in January but didn’t feature for Villa’s first team after being brought back.

Selling him this summer could be a smart piece of business as he is unlikely to break into the starting XI under Unai Emery.

If the Villans can secure a good profit for the Dutchman, that will go towards dealing with PSR and benefit them in the long term.
