Aston Villa transfer development as £100m update emerges at Villa Park
Aston Villa are highly unlikely to splash £100million on new transfers this summer, according to Dan Plumley.
The Villans are set to complete a deal that will see Douglas Luiz move to Juventus in exchange for Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barranchea plus £23.6million [David Ornstein, 22 June], while a £5million deal for Ross Barkley is said to be advanced too [Fabrizio Romano, 23 June].
Unai Emery is keen to bolster the squad ahead of their maiden Champions League campaign in 2024/25, and football finance expert Plumley believes Aston Villa are likely to find more value transfers rather than splash the cash.
“Absolutely, that’s a good example of looking for a bit of value in the market,” he exclusively told Aston Villa News.
“We know he’s still a really good player and he’s had a really good season at Luton, it’s a big step up for him going back there and in terms of where Villa are at the minute, but it does add a well known name, a very talented player, more squad depth, for a relatively good fee in this market.
“You’ll probably see a few deals like that as well, an even as I’m saying Villa will probably be looking to spend, are they in the market to spend £50-100m on players? Probably not.
“So it’s how you can work in that mid-range of the market, deliver some value and boost the squad as well because they’re playing Saturday-Tuesday or Saturday-Wednesday for a fair chunk of the season is not something they’ve been used to for the last few years. So it will take it’s toll as well.”
Aston Villa to scour the transfer market for value deals
Emery is keen to strengthen the squad in several areas, and the club have been working hard to bring players in already this summer.
Lewis Dobbin has already arrived from Everton in a £10million deal and Barkley is likely to follow behind in the not-so-distant future, meaning the club’s strategy is clear for the coming window.
There will no doubt be some big deals done this summer also, because the quality of the squad needs to be lifted ahead of looking to challenge in the Champions League.
Fans can be excited that the board are working hard to strengthen the squad, and that they’re not just looking to bring in big names for big money that could possibly disrupt what is happening at Villa Park.
There is a clear plan and strategy in place, and the upcoming season is sure to be exciting.
