Douglas Luiz closes on Aston Villa exit as Fabrizio Romano drops medical update

Aston Villa ace Douglas Luiz is set to undergo his Juventus medical in the Brazil camp ahead of his move to Turin, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The two teams have managed to agree a player-plus-cash offer for the Brazil international following recent speculation.

Romano, posting his update on X (26 June), added that both Samuel Iling-Junior and Enzo Barrenechea are undergoing the second part of their medicals for the Villans ahead of their move in the opposite direction.

How Aston Villa managed to get such a strong deal for Douglas Luiz

Although Luiz is arguably one of Unai Emery’s best players, his sale this summer will have no doubt helped the club in their future endeavours.

The initial deal they agreed with Juventus included former Leeds United man Weston McKennie coming to the Villans.

However, after the US international couldn’t agree upon exit terms with Juventus, he was subsequently removed from the deal [Fabrizio Romano, 19 June].

This then resulted in the Villans looking elsewhere among the Italian team’s squad. Hence, why Barrenechea is now making his way to the Premier League alongside Iling-Junior.

The exit of Luiz always looked a distinct possibility with Villa trading before the deadline for Profit and Sustainability accounts, but with Barrenechea performing a similar role he could slot right into the first team.

The addition of the Juve duo alongside the rumoured incoming of Ian Maatsen [Fabrizio Romano, 22 June] is a boost to Emery’s options ahead of next season.

As the Villans ready themselves for their maiden Champions League campaign, only time will tell whether the sale of Luiz was the right thing to do.
