Ian Maatsen completes Aston Villa medical ahead of Chelsea transfer as new PSR claim made

Dan Bardell has assessed the likely signing of Ian Maatsen for Aston Villa from Chelsea which has now moved close to completion.

Fabrizio Romano has given his ‘here we go’ seal of approval over the deal (23 June), with a medical said to have been completed.

The transfer specialist has suggested that the Villans will pay £37.5million for the Dutchman on a deal lasting until 2030.

Now Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has spoken highly of the 22-year-old and believes he is going to be a positive signing.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “I think it’s a brilliant signing. If Villa give him a six-year contract, everything is spread across those six years so it’s not being scrutinised by PSR.

He’s had good EFL loan spells with Coventry City and then Burnley; he had a brilliant time with Borussia Dortmund, where he got great Champions League experience.

It’s something that I think will be crucial to this signing because in the Villa squad, he becomes the one with the most Champions League experience despite his young age.

He’s got plenty of room to grow and is someone who is only going to increase in value. He can play multiple positions which makes him a unique option.

He’s more of a Unai Emery-style left-back than the ones he already had available which is positive.

Aston Villa set to sign Ian Maatsen from Chelsea

The Villans are already very active in the transfer window as they look to balance the books and deal with PSR concerns this summer.

This has seen untraditional swap deals be utilised with a move for Tim Iroegbunam and Lewis Dobbin already being confirmed.

Now it appears that Villa are going to sign Maatsen, while youngster Omari Kellyman completes a move to Stamford Bridge.

Although it is frustrating for the Villans to be losing the 18-year-old talent, it must be said that they are on the better side of the deal.

They get a player who is coming off the back of an extremely productive loan spell that saw him feature in the Champions League final.

At 22 he is far from at the peak of his powers and will only get better in claret and blue, under the tutelage of Unai Emery.

Villa want to get business done before the end of June so it could be a busy week in B6.
