Aston Villa and Juventus ponder other options in Douglas Luiz deal amid Weston McKennie update
Weston McKennie could be removed from the Aston Villa and Juventus swap deal regarding the transfer of Douglas Luiz, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian journalist took to X (19 June) and explained that despite new contacts occurring between the two clubs there is still no agreement in place for the transfer.
This could result in the United States international being removed from the swap deal and force the Villans to look at other options.
However, Romano added that Unai Emery will only go ahead with the deal if both the technical and financial factors are fair.
What is next for Aston Villa and Douglas Luiz?
As with many of the Premier League clubs, there are some question marks around where the club currently lies in regard to Profit and Sustainability rules.
Although Luiz is one of Aston Villa’s best players, the fact that Emery was receiving two players and some money in exchange for the Brazil international was quite a tempting prospect.

But with question marks over both Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior’s situations, former Villa man Alan Hutton said the situation could blow a deal out of the water.
In terms of where Villa and Luiz can go from here, it’s up to Juventus and McKennie being able to agree the terms for his exit.
The US international’s contract is expiring at the end of the 2024/25 campaign so faces an uncertain Juve future either way, but the prospect of him joining Villa as part of the Luiz deal is not as cut and dry as it once looked.
And, although the midfielder’s last stint in the Premier League wasn’t the most inspiring, the rumoured deal that Villa were trying to strike with Chelsea for Conor Gallagher now seems to be off the cards.
So, it could be that Emery finds himself back at the drawing board in terms of adding midfield reinforcement.
In other Aston Villa news, the Villans have opened talks with a Brazilian goalkeeper in a deal with £10m+.
