NSWE backed to challenge Premier League after Aston Villa PSR admission
Dan Bardell has urged Nassef Sawiris to challenge the Premier League after the Aston Villa owner spoke out about the financial challenges the club are facing.
In an interview with the Financial Times (11 June), the Villa owner said that the league’s Profit and Sustainability Rules do not make sense.
It has been suggested that Villa need to sell players before 30 June in order to meet the threshold of not losing more than £105million over the course of a three-year period.
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell wants to see the club challenge the Premier League over its current rules that he thinks create an uneven landscape.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “As dismayed as I am with some people underneath Nassef Sawiris, I’m a big fan of him and Wes Edens. As owners go I have absolutely zero criticism of them at all.
“What he said in that interview made a lot of sense. Villa are trying to build and they aren’t being allowed to.
“In the current landscape with the rules that are there, Villa are going to struggle to catch up with the teams around them financially and it’s telling that after qualifying for the Champions League they’re having to sell one of their best players.
“I completely understand when he talks about managing spreadsheets rather than a football club. It is easier for the clubs that have been around the elite for a long time.
“I hope he takes to Premier League to task over these ludicrous rules because Villa have these magnificent owners who want to put money into the club and they can’t.“
Aston Villa and NSWE to challenge Premier League
The Villans qualified for the Champions League in a superb 2023-24 season.
Thanks to the work of Unai Emery, Villa have gone from a midtable side to a consistent challenger for Europe in the last two years.
Now the club faces problems off the pitch to comply with financial rules, which could potentially cause problems on it if their better players have to be moved on.
Due to PSR issues, the sale of key players like Douglas Luiz [Fabrizio Romano] is going to be necessary in order to comply with the Premier League and avoid punishment.
This has seen Villa also go in search of swap deals [The Telegraph] for Jhon Duran who has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea in recent weeks.

It is undoubtedly a bit of a bizarre situation that a club that has qualified for the Champions League has to potentially weaken themselves to be able to deal with financial regulations.
There are those that will suggest NSWE knew the rules and have to deal with the consequences but perhaps now is the time to really scrutinise if the rules are actually working.
