Aston Villa chances of signing Tammy Abraham assessed amid Jhon Duran exit rumours

Dan Bardell thinks there would be a “romance factor” involved in Aston Villa signed Tammy Abraham to replace the exit-linked Jhon Duran but doubts he would join as a back-up striker.

Matt Law has reported for The Telegraph (13 June) that the Villans would look to sign the Englishman if they Duran is sold to Premier League rivals Chelsea, who Abraham left to join Roma in August 2021.

Colombian youngster Duran has been heavily linked with a switch to Stamford Bridge with Villa considering a swap deal involving Ian Maatsen [The Telegraph].

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell would have no qualms with Abraham coming in if Duran left but thinks the chances of it happening are slim.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “If I was offered that swap in terms of personnel for Villa I think I’d probably take it.

Obviously, Abraham is coming off the back of a bad injury but he ended the season well and scored goals for Roma so he’s proved his fitness.

He’s a more experienced striker than Duran and has played a lot of games in Europe with Chelsea as well. You’ve also got the romance factor that he’s done well playing for Villa previously.

I’d be surprised if he came in though, just because he’d know he’s going to be second choice and I don’t think he’d want that. I know he was heavily linked a year ago before he got injured.

Aston Villa could replace Jhon Duran with Tammy Abraham

Villa fans love Abraham and would love to see him back in claret and blue. His impact on the 2018-19 promotion season was huge and so important.

It would be a poetic return for him to come back to B6 on a permanent deal with the club in the Champions League.

This all hinges on whether or not Duran departs and completes his dream move to Chelsea and if a swap deal can be realised.

The Villans are looking to deal with PSR problems first before they delve into the transfer market and sign new players.

With that being said, if a swap for Duran and Maatsen is completed, Villa will be in desperate need of a backup striker and Abraham could be that man.

Aston Villa man Jhon Duran

He is coming off the back of a serious injury and hasn’t scored a competitive goal since late April but this could be useful in lowering his fee.

It will be disappointing to lose Duran so early in his Villa career but to replace him with someone with European experience may prove to be wise.
