Aston Villa make approach to sign Ian Maatsen as Monchi hailed for trying to strike transfer deal

Dan Bardell believes Ian Maatsen is the type of player Aston Villa should be signing after links of a potential swap deal with Chelsea for Jhon Duran.

Matt Law has reported for The Telegraph (14 June) that the Blues have been given permission to enter personal talks with the striker.

The deal only appears to be possible if the Villans are able to bring in a player from Stamford Bridge in a swap deal, similar to the Douglas Luiz deal with Juventus.

One player of interest to Unai Emery is Maatsen with Law adding that Villa have approached Chelsea with an enquiry about him.

Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell rates Maatsen highly and sees him as a potentially positive signing.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “Chelsea are like Villa who are trying to rush through the Douglas Luiz deal so it’s quite clear that they need to sell someone before 30 June.

Maatsen is a very good player and has had two positive loans with Burnley and Dortmund which has seen him play in a Champions League final.

He’s the profile of player that I think Villa should be signing. I think that would be an exciting move for Villa. He is a player that I rate and is a different type of left-back than they already have at the club.

With the experience he already has at a young age, he is exactly the type of player that Villa should be looking to sign.

Aston Villa interested in Ian Maatsen deal

The Villans are looking to balance the books and comply with PSR rules and deal with any financial issues they may have to during the window.

This has seen swap deals be considered by the club which bring players in while helping to bring in transfer funds on the balance sheet.

Luiz’s departure to Juventus will see Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior come in while Duran’s move could see Maatsen sign.

The Dutchman is off to the EUROs off the back of featuring in the Champions League final at Wembley in recent weeks.

It was a productive loan spell for the 22-year-old who also won the Championship with Burnley under Vincent Kompany last season.

Duran v Lille
Aston Villa man Jhon Duran

He is a left-back who loves to bomb forward which could be perfect in Emery’s set up as he looks to shape his squad ready for the Champions League.

Maatsen will bring experience of the competition as well as a youthful nature which will certainly benefit the Villa squad.

With it seeming like Duran wants a move to Chelsea, if Villa can get the youngster as part of the deal it could prove to be an excellent piece of business on and off the pitch.
