Aston Villa have enquired about Chelsea ace Ian Maatsen amid discussions over Jhon Duran’s future at Villa Park, according to The Telegraph.

The outlet reported on its website on Friday (14 June) that the versatile defender has a £35million release clause in his contract and while he impressed on loan with Borussia Dortmund, they’re not willing to meet it.

Dortmund’s decision will allow Villa and other teams to swoop in, but Unai Emery’s side will only be able to sign players from Chelsea this summer if Duran completes a move the other way.

The Blues have been permitted to speak to the Colombian forward and discuss personal terms, but they are also carrying out some background checks to gauge his character ahead of a potential move.

Villa need to strengthen this summer as they prepare for a Champions League campaign at Villa Park and while Maatsen may be young, he has shown this year that he is capable of having an impact in that competition.

The Chelsea gem played a crucial role in Dortmund’s run to the final in the second half of the campaign whilst on loan with the Bundesliga club and that could massively help Emery and his side as they look to adapt next term.

His versatility as well will be a massive bonus as he is capable of playing at both left-back and in a more advanced role. If anyone can get the best out of him in the Premier League it would be Emery who puts a lot of faith in his fullbacks.
