Tammy Abraham stance on summer Aston Villa return mooted as Roma transfer update emerges
Roma striker Tammy Abraham would “like to come back” to Aston Villa during the summer transfer window, according to Alan Hutton.
The English international enjoyed an impressive loan spell at Villa Park during the 2018/19 season as he scored 26 goals in 40 appearances in all competitions to help fire the Villans back into the Premier League via the playoffs.
Abraham has spent the last three campaigns in Italy with Roma, but having missed the majority of last season through injury, the Italian giants are understood to be ready to cash in on the striker this summer [TEAMtalk, 6 June].
Although West Ham United have also been credited with an interest in the 26-year-old, Hutton believes the opportunity to play in the Champions League next season could sway Abraham towards Villa Park instead.
“He was outstanding when I was there,” Hutton exclusively told Villa News.
“I think he’s got everything to be a top striker, he’s gone over to Roma and done really well before he had a bad injury that has kept him out for a long period of time.
“I think he would like to come back if we’re just talking football-wise. Being in the Premier League, being close to home, playing in the Champions League is something that would really kind of get him going.
“The only flip-side to that will be is he happy over there? Does he like living that lifestyle over in Rome? I presume he probably does as well, but him going to Aston Villa would make that squad better.
“I feel that Ollie Watkins needs a partner, he needs somebody to help him because there will be times when he might not hit top form and he will need somebody to come in and help him out.
“Him knowing the club, I think that could be a good way for him to come back.”
Will Aston Villa and Unai Emery sign Tammy Abraham during the summer transfer window at Villa Park?
As Hutton suggests, Watkins is in need of some support at the top end of the pitch ahead of next season, especially as speculation continues to swirl around Jhon Duran’s long-term future under Unai Emery.
Abraham may have had a couple of difficult seasons in Italy, but he has shown that he is more than capable of providing a consistent threat at the highest level, both in the Premier League and abroad.

Under the management of Emery, the 26-year-old could get back to his best and rediscover the spark that he had in his first campaign with Roma. The Villa boss did exactly that with Watkins as soon as he took over from Steven Gerrard.
Whether or not the Villans are genuinely interested in securing Abraham’s signature remains to be seen, but it certainly appears as though he would be up for the move.
