Giovani Lo Celso to Aston Villa transfer update as Douglas Luiz closes on exit
Dan Bardell doesn’t think Aston Villa will sign Giovani Lo Celso this summer from Tottenham Hotspur even if Douglas Luiz departs for Juventus.
The Sun reported (6 June) that the Argentina international could be on the move this summer with Villa named as an interested party.
This news has coincided with reports from Fabrizio Romano (11 June) that a move for Luiz to Juventus is moving closer to completion.
The Villians would receive Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling Jr as part of the deal but Unai Emery could look to bring in further cover for the midfield.
Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell believes that despite working with Lo Celso before the Villa boss won’t look to sign him on top of Ross Barkley this summer.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “He’s a player I’ve always liked. When he’s made cameo appearances for Tottenham this season I actually thought he was quite good.
“I don’t think we’re living in a world where Villa sign Ross Barkley and Lo Celso, I don’t see both and I know Barkley is happening.
“There’s always going to be a link there because Emery has worked with him before but Villa don’t need him even if Luiz goes, they aren’t the same sort of player.
“I don’t think there’s anything in it, I’d be very surprised if that move was to happen.“
Aston Villa links to Giovani Lo Celso rubbished
Villa will need reinforcements in the midfield this summer if Luiz leaves, there is no doubt about that.
The Brazilian has been one of the most improved players under Emery and showed his importance across the course of last season.
His ability on the ball alongside the likes of Boubacar Kamara and Youri Tielemans helped provide a base to every Villa attack.

He often played further forward in that setup so he potentially wouldn’t represent a direct replacement for Luiz if he was to come in.
There is a lot of work for Emery and Monchi to do this summer to build a squad ready for the Champions League next season.
