NSWE to hand Unai Emery ‘bigger say’ in Aston Villa recruitment after new Villa Park development

Aston Villa manager Unai Emery will have been handed a “bigger say” in terms of transfer after signing a new contract at Villa Park, according to Alan Hutton.

The Villans confirmed on Monday (28 May) that the Spaniard had penned a new five-year deal at Villa Park having led his side to a fourth-placed finish in the Premier League last season and the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League.

On top of the contract extension, Emery has seen his title change from head coach to manager as he, Monchi and Villa’s recruitment team prepare to add to their squad ahead of next season’s return to the Champions League.

Hutton admits that he is delighted to see the 52-year-old pen a new deal so soon after the end of the season and believes that Emery will be able to take Villa to the next level in this summer’s transfer window.

“I think that’s exactly what it means, that he has a larger say,” Hutton told Villa News.

“He’s come in as head coach and he’s shown his ability to coach with exactly what he has done over a number of months at the club. He’s finished seventh, then got them into the top four, he’s taken them to the next level and he probably wants a bigger say in terms of who comes in.

“He knows how he wants to play and he knows what fits him. I think he works really well with Monchi, they’ve got a good relationship with each other and that is only going to take them to the next level.

“I think for a period of time, clubs were moving away from having a manager. It was just you coach, we’ll get a sporting director in, these are the players that you have. Work with them and make it work.

“If it doesn’t then they would change the head coach, but I think them making him the manager shows the confidence that they have in him and what they expect him to do over the next number of years.”

Will Unai Emery and Aston Villa be active in the summer transfer window at Villa Park?

As Hutton suggests, both Emery and Monchi have worked incredibly effectively together when it comes to recruitment over the last few years and it is very rare that the pair get a transfer wrong, particularly when it comes to incomings.

While the likes of Clement Lenglet and Nicolo Zaniolo may not have quite hit the heights expected of them during their loan spells, Pau Torres, Youri Tielemans and Moussa Diaby have all come in and improved Villa this season.

Handing Emery a bit more control over recruitment will only be a good thing for the Villans in the long run. He knows what sort of players his side needs and therefore it makes sense that he would help try and find them.

Hopefully, Villa can have another successful summer this year and then get off to a good start when the Premier League rolls around once again.
