Unai Emery may have had enough of Jhon Duran, Aston Villa reality check needed

Dan Bardell believes Jhon Duran needs to be brought down to earth as he seemingly wants to force a move from Aston Villa to Chelsea in the summer transfer window.

The Colombian has been liking media related to the Blues on social media which has led fans to question his loyalty to the Villans.

These questions were only amplified when Mauricio Pochettino was seen hugging Duran after the clash between the two sides at Villa Park (27 April).

With Villa in the Champions League and Chelsea in the Conference League, Sky Sports and talkSPORT journalist Bardell has questioned why he would want to leave this summer.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “I just think he needs a reality check. I don’t know where at this stage in his career and development he thinks he is going to go and play every week at a high level.

I think right now he is the number two striker at a Champions League club. I’m not sure what he expects.

Part of me thinks there’s a player there and I would loathe to lose him but the other half of me thinks he’s not worth the hassle because there’s been problems off the pitch. Emery has probably had enough and wants someone more reliable.

The Chelsea links won’t go away but does Pochettino leaving change that? I just think he needs a reality check. I think he could look back and regret leaving.

Jhon Duran departing Aston Villa for Chelsea makes no sense

Fundamentally, leaving a team that has just finished fourth for a team that finished sixth and is in the Conference League doesn’t make much sense.

Duran right now looking forward to a season in the Champions League and is right now the second-choice option under Emery.

It is fair that he might want to feature more regularly than he has done but there would be no guarantees of that at Chelsea.

The Blues have a new manager coming in and have striker options like Nicholas Jackson and Christopher Nkunku. Duran is not better than either of them right now.

This could see him move to Stamford Bridge to play even fewer minutes than he has for the Villans this campaign.

The 20-year-old as undoubted quality and will become a great player but if he stays at Aston Villa under Emery he will improve.

A move to Chelsea could prove to be disastrous for his career given the form of Chelsea in recent seasons.
