Aston Villa told to sell Diego Carlos despite activity suggesting he wants to stay
Ty Bracey believes it may be financially beneficial for Aston Villa to sell Diego Carlos this summer after Unai Emery gave the green light for his departure.
A report from Sport (20 May) suggested that the Villa manager had given the defender and his agent the go-ahead to leave the club in the transfer window.
This update has come after a report from TEAMtalk (2 May) said that AC Milan were leading the race to sign Carlos.
Villa podcaster Bracey has suggested losing his wages from the books and signing a cheaper option could prove to be beneficial for the club.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “He’s done what’s required of him when we’ve needed him but he’s on £100k-a-week which is a lot of money for somebody who isn’t a first-team starter every week.
“A lot of his starts have come off the back of injuries to other players. By looking at his posts on social media it looks like he wants to stay at Aston Villa really.
“If Villa can get someone in for cheaper who is capable of doing what Carlos can then they should absolutely go for it.“
Should Aston Villa sell Diego Carlos?
Carlos joined the Villans in 2022 in a deal worth £26m [BBC] from Sevilla before his first season was ruined by injury.
In his second campaign at Villa Park, he has certainly had more of an impact but has only made 20 starts and seven substitute appearances [FotMob].
The Brazilian was standout in showings against Arsenal and Manchester City but certainly has an error in him which makes him frustrating at times.
He is useful in Emery’s system as he is comfortable with the ball at his feet. This saw him make 1,184 passes over the course of the season.

Given that he is on a high wage and cost a large fee two years ago, he may be worth letting go if an acceptable bid comes in.
With the constraints that FFP are putting on Premier League clubs, including Villa, moving on high earners for cheaper and more effective players could be paramount.
A move away for Carlos could prove beneficial for both parties during the summer transfer window.
