Aston Villa ‘ready to spend’ in transfer window as club-record £40m boost emerges at Villa Park
Aston Villa will have managed to “balance the books” and reduce their PSR fears ahead of the transfer window with a new shirt sponsorship deal, according to Alan Hutton.
The Villans’ last set of accounts led to suggestions that Unai Emery could be forced to sell some of his biggest stars at the end of the season to ensure that Villa didn’t breach the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules [iNews, 5 March].
But reports suggest that Villa have now agreed the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in the club’s history having struck a £40million agreement with Greek online betting platform Betano [The Telegraph, 21 March], worth double their current agreement with BK8.
While Hutton believes the current owners at Villa Park would have been willing to invest and back Emery in the transfer market this summer already, he thinks will ensure that the Villa board are “ready to spend”.
“I think it always helps when you’ve got investment coming into the club,” Hutton told Villa News.
“It means you can go and put that money into your playing staff if you want so I think it’s good moving forward. Aston Villa are a huge club, like we’ve said before, they’re fighting for the Champions League now and they’re in the semi-final of the Conference League.
“They’ve always been a big club in my eyes and look they’ve got owners who are very wealthy as well and ready to spend money, but you just need to balance the books right and I’m sure that’s what they’re doing.
“That’s where this comes into it as well, but they’re in a good place right now.”
Will Unai Emery and Aston Villa be busy in the summer transfer window at Villa Park?
Villa look set to book their place in next season’s Champions League and while that will be a massive boost for everybody involved at Villa Park, it does mean that the Villans will have to be busy in the transfer market.
Emery and his recruitment team have to try and find players who are capable of taking the Spaniard’s side to the next level. While they have already been linked with plenty of options, none of those candidates will come cheap.

Hopefully, this record-breaking deal for the club partnered with the influx of money that Champions League qualification brings with it will be enough for Aston Villa to avoid having to sell a homegrown star like Jacob Ramsey.
It would have been a massive step backwards for Emery and his side if the Villa boss was forced to sell one of his most valuable assets like Emi Marinez or Ollie Watkins just to ensure his side wouldn’t be hit with a point deduction next term.
