Aston Villa ace Douglas Luiz leaves Lee Hendrie with head in hands after moment v Olympiacos
Douglas Luiz missed a vital penalty in the 4-2 Europa Conference League defeat for Aston Villa against Olympiacos at Villa Park, leaving Lee Hendrie with his head in his hands.
The Sky Sports pundit could not believe what he had seen when the penalty clipped the outside of the post before going wide, sharing that Villa Park was “like a library” in the aftermath.
A missed penalty summed up Villa’s night after a hattrick from Ayoub El Kaabi and a deflected effort from Santiago Hezze saw Unai Emery’s team ship four goals at home.
Commentating on the game live on Sky Sports News [2 May], Hendrie shared: “He hits the outside of the post.
“Do you know what, this night can’t get any worse. I can’t believe it. It hits the outside of the post and goes wide. Oh, my goodness me. It’s like a library now, trust me.”
Douglas Luiz lets Aston Villa down v Olympiacos
Luiz was actually one of the better performers for Villa on the night despite the horror show performance overall, but the missed penalty and conceding one of his own let his side down at a moment when a goal may have inspired a vital comeback.
The Brazilian recorded a 95 per cent pass accuracy, four key passes and a 100 per cent long pass accuracy as he was confident and composed as ever in possession despite the mass panic when defending at Villa Park. [Sofascore]
Four tackles, three fouls drawn, a 100 per cent aerial duel success rate and seven out of 12 ground duels won were a display of how even in a bad performance the midfielder can stand out as one of the more impressive players on the pitch.
However, having hit the target with just one of his four attempts with a 25 per cent accuracy, a zero per cent dribble success rate, conceding four fouls including a penalty at the other end, and ultimately missing Villa’s spot kick, he let his side down with a horror show in the key moments.
It was a disastrous night overall for Villa after so much hope in the build-up that the club would take their first steps towards another European Cup final, but they have been left with a mountain to climb in a visit to Greece next week.
