Stan Collymore ‘really worried’ after what he saw Robin Olsen do in Aston Villa v Chelsea
Aston Villa had a second half to forget in their 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Villa Park, with Stan Collymore picking out goalkeeper Robin Olsen for particular criticism.
Olsen replaced the injured Emiliano Martinez between the sticks for Aston Villa at halftime, and their collapse against Chelsea has Collymore “really worried” about the Swede.
The goalkeeper achieved just a 6.2 rating on SofaScore, and that could have been much worse too; Chelsea had a late winner ruled out having already beaten Olsen with two speculative shots that earned him a woeful -1.09 for goals prevented.
Collymore, whose former side Villa surrendered a 2-0 half-time lead, shared his feelings in a post on X, saying: “I’m really worried about Olsen.”
Aston Villa and Olsen barely escape with draw against Chelsea
Aston Villa remain seven points clear of Tottenham in the Champions League race, but their second-half collapse against Chelsea, coupled with Spurs having three games in hand, shows that Unai Emery’s side are vulnerable.
Olsen’s half-time introduction did very little to settle the ship amidst a second-half onslaught against Chelsea, and his 6.2 SofaScore rating briefly dropped to 5.8, before Axel Disasi’s potential winner for the Blues was pulled back for a foul on Villa’s Diego Carlos.
Olsen made two saves but also conceded two goals, both in his far corner, and was also beaten from close range by Disasi’s disallowed header, having come off his line too slowly despite winning two previous aerial duels.
That shakiness pales in comparison to Martinez, who completed 85% of his passes to Olsen’s 53%, and was successful with half of his six long balls, as opposed to just three of 10 (30%) from the feet of Olsen.
With must-win matches in both the Premier League and UEFA Conference League coming up, Emery may have been just as spooked as Collymore by Olsen’s performance, and will be hoping that Martinez’s injury doesn’t keep him out of the Villa XI for long.
