Bayern Munich still want to hire Aston Villa manager Unai Emery despite contract news

Bayern Munich will still want to hire Aston Villa manager Unai Emery despite new developments at Villa Park, according to Alan Hutton.

The Villans announced on Tuesday (23 April) that they had agreed a contract extension with the Spanish manager to see him extend his stay with the Premier League club until the end of the 2026/27 league campaign.

Emery has repeatedly been linked with Bayern ever since they announced Thomas Tuchel would be departing at the end of the season, with club legend Lothar Matthaus urging the German giants to secure the Villa boss’ signature [Sky Sports, 21 April].

While Hutton insists that there was never any real chance of Emery leaving Villa Park this summer, he does admit that it would still be incredibly hard for the 52-year-old to reject an approach from the “massive” club.

“I would like to think from my point of view, there was never any chance of him going,” Hutton told Villa News.

“That’s my situation, everything that he’s done and how quickly he’s turned this team down from last season finishing seventh to this season, the progression, challenging for fourth, the semi-final of the Conference League, it has been unbelievable.

“I think if he had gone right now it could have crumbled. You can’t see what could have possibly happened if that was to come and he did leave, so I don’t think he was ever going to go.

“The other side to it is, that the likes of Bayern Munich are huge teams, they are absolutely massive in terms of world football. Can you turn that down? His CV speaks for itself, especially what he’s done at Villa, I think that is one of his biggest achievements.

“It doesn’t surprise me that they’re looking at him, but I think the way that the manager is and what he’s doing at this moment in time he was never going to leave.”

Unai Emery still wanted to be Bayern Munich after Aston Villa contract update

The job that Emery has done at Villa Park cannot be understated as the Spaniard has managed to transform a relegation-bound squad left by Steven Gerrard into one of the Premier League’s most in-form sides.

Villa are now in the driving seat in the race for the Champions League qualification and while nothing is set in stone, it is increasingly likely that the former Arsenal boss will be leading the Villans into the top four this term.

While it seems unlikely Emery would be willing to throw away that project so soon after signing the dotted line on his contract extension, stranger things have happened in football. Hopefully, Hutton will be correct and the 52-year-old won’t be going anywhere.
