Douglas Luiz to become one of Aston Villa ‘top earners’ as contract update emerges at Villa Park
Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz will become one of the club’s “top earners” if he pens a new deal at Villa Park, according to Alan Hutton.
The Brazilian has been in exceptional form so far this season under Unai Emery, scoring nine goals and laying on five assists to help the Villans climb into the Premier League top four and the race for Champions League football.
Reports emerged in April that the 25-year-old’s good form is set to be rewarded by those in charge at Villa Park with a bumper new contract [Dean Jones, 14 April] as speculation around his future grows ahead of the transfer window.
While Hutton is optimistic that Luiz will agree on fresh terms, he does admit that a new contract won’t put an end to all the transfer rumours suggesting that no matter what happens between now and the end of the season “money talks”.
“I hope not, he is so important,” Hutton told Villa News.
“He was missing for the Arsenal game and the Bournemouth game but he’s so important for what he brings to the team. He’s that go-between, he links the play from the back to the front and his set-pieces.
“He’s grown in stature since he’s been at the football club, he’s just got better season after season so for them to lose him would be a huge blow. Money talks, if somebody comes in with a huge bid, he’s still at a good age then it might be something that they look at.
“But Unai Emery is building something and this is just the start for me. If they do get the Champions League, surely that’s the goal to play at the highest level possible. You’ll then be a top-four team, you’ll be playing in the Champions League and I think they will then add in the summer.
“He’ll be in a strong healthy position, he can go and ask for a new contract or the club will give him it. I’m sure he’ll be one of the top earners after that so I think he’ll be in a good position either way.”
Will Douglas Luiz leave Aston Villa and Unai Emery during the summer transfer window?
Villa have been tipped to lose a number of their biggest stars ahead of the summer transfer window, with the likes of England international Ollie Watkins and Argentine goalkeeper Emi Martinez expected to attract interest.

But should Emery’s side book their place in the Champions League next season, it could massively boost their hopes of keeping their best players at Villa Park because it is every player’s dream to play at the highest level.
Hopefully, fresh terms can be agreed with Luiz before the end of the season. While it wouldn’t put an end to the constant speculation, it would at least ensure the Villans would be in line for a big payday if they sold the Brazilian.
