Aston Villa: Unai Emery to sign ‘upgrade’ on Matty Cash as transfer news emerges from Italy
Bryan King believes Aston Villa could “upgrade” on Matty Cash by signing Giovanni Di Lorenzo from Napoli this summer.
The ex-Villa scout believes the club would be wise to replace Cash, who he feels is “suspect defensively”, especially if they are to be competing in the UEFA Champions League next season.
As per Il Mattino (4 April), Di Lorenzo is seriously considering leaving Napoli amid interest from Villa and Manchester United.
The 30-year-old, who is Napoli’s captain, originally planned to retire in Naples but is now open to leaving having become unhappy with the direction of the Serie A side.
King – speaking exclusively to Villa News – believes this is the profile of player Unai Emery’s side should be targeting.
“This would be a positive statement from Villa, which would demonstrate that they are prepared to compete with the big boys,” said King.
“If they can bring a player of that quality to the club, it would be a good upgrade on Cash because he is a bit suspect defensively to me, he makes a lot of rash tackles.
“This signing would prove that Villa mean business, and if they are going to be playing in the UEFA Champions League next season, then these are the type of signings they need to be making.”
Could Aston Villa sign Giovanni Di Lorenzo to play under Unai Emery next season?
If Villa were to beat Manchester United to the signature of a European player, that would further demonstrate just how far the club has come in such a short space of time
While Napoli have struggled this season, they lifted the Serie A last year and were competing in this year’s Champions League, and signing a player with this experience could be huge for Emery.

While the club are making positive strides forward, not a lot of their players are experienced at the highest level, and bringing in players who have played at that level will only help to progress the club further.
