Dion Dublin slams Diego Carlos on Match of the Day after what he saw Aston Villa defender do v Brentford

Dion Dublin slammed Aston Villa for their defensive showing against Brentford as they conceded three in the second half, he told Match of the Day.

It looked like a routine win for the Villans as Morgan Rogers smashed home his first Villa goal to double his side’s lead.

What followed was nine minutes of madness as the Bees went from 2-0 down to 3-2 up thanks to some poor defending.

Speaking on Match of the Day, former Villa man Dublin was baffled as to why the backline was so poor in that spell.

On that, he said: “I just think everything seems to be going well for Villa but there’s little things they can tidy up. I think defensively their positional play’s not great. [Diego] Carlos has got to come back, he’s got two players to mark, if he just comes back a few yards then he doesn’t lose his man and that’s where he should stay. Why he’s coming out of that position, I don’t know.

“[Pau] Torres gets his eyes on Mbeumo, he can see where he is and you’ve got to stay touch tight, you’ve got to know where your forward is. Again he goes into the space, gets under the ball, that’s twice that happened and twice they’ve been punished. It happened all game.”

What went wrong for Aston Villa v Brentford?

To be 2-0 up at home and not come away with all three points isn’t good enough no matter who the opposition is or circumstances.

Conceding three goals in such a short spell thanks to many defensive issues is a problem Unai Emery has to sort and quickly.

From Ezri Konsa not closing down Sergio Reguilon to Carlos leaving Yoane Wissa free and Torres misjudging the ball for Mbeumo, it was poor all around.

Thomas Frank’s side set up in a 3-5-2 which was clearly done to frustrate the Villans. This was only added to in the second half when they changed to a man-marking system.

According to FotMob, the home side registered 70% possession and completed 488 passes compared to Brentford’s 168 on the day. It’s safe to say Villa dominated the ball.

Emery’s men also had more shots on goal with 11 but this was heavily outweighed by the away side who created three big chances. Much better than Villa who had just one.

In yet another struggle against a low block at Villa Park, there is a dent in the Champions League hopes. They need to bounce back quickly with Lille and Arsenal on the horizon.
