Aston Villa player ratings v Brentford: Ollie Watkins shines, Konsa and Carlos poor with 4/10

Aston Villa threw a win away against Brentford at Villa Park, fighting back to draw 3-3 despite being ahead and dominating.

Ollie Watkins and Morgan Rogers scored to hand the home side a big lead before the away side turned it around completely to lead before the England international rescued a point.

The result leaves Villa three points ahead of Spurs in the Premier League in fourth, with the Londoners now having two games in hand for those Champions League spots.

Villa News rates each player out of 10 for their performance, using data from FotMob.

Emi Martinez- 5

The Argentine had so little to do all day that it will hugely frustrate him that he’s conceded three. He wasn’t helped by his defenders and can feel hard done by considering the level of chance the away side created.

Ezri Konsa- 4

Konsa was surprisingly poor when defending up against Sergio Reguilon who played his part in the second and third goals for Brentford. He did manage to complete the most passes of the match with 80 but this won’t change the feeling that he could have stopped the Brentford comeback.

Diego Carlos- 4

The Brazilian had such a good first half but the whole Villa defence was poor in the second half and it was Carlos’ poor positioning which allowed Wissa to score. Carlos only registered 20% ground duel success and 50% aerial which just needed to be much better.

Pau Torres- 4

Like Carlos, some poor positioning inside the area allowed space for Mbeumo whose volley levelled up the scores. Like always, he registered 87% pass accuracy while making 52 passes throughout the 90 minutes. Poor defending but positive offensively again.

Lucas Digne- 5

The Frenchman was positive going forward but this did leave space in behind for the Brentford counterattack. He did almost score a superb bicycle kick late on but it wasn’t to be as he was later substituted.

Leon Bailey- 6

A last-ditch tackle in the first half from Bailey was superb and add to this his cross caused the problem for the equaliser, he had a positive day where some were poor. He will be disappointed with a dribble success rate of just 33% which is something that halted his forward movement on the day.

John McGinn- 6

A frustrating return, in terms of result, for McGinn who did manage to register an assist in his first game since a red card againts Tottenham. 86% pass accuracy and an assist was cancelled out by no tackles won and just 29% of duels successful.

Douglas Luiz- 5

Luiz knew he had to be careful by the way of a booking in this game but was still able to be creative throughout. Unfortunately, he did pick up that booking but did create the most chances in the game with two.

Morgan Rogers- 7

Every Villa fan will have been pleased to have seen Rogers grab his first goal in claret and blue. His first touch and strike were perfect and he got his deserved goal. Add to this his 92% pass accuracy and 100% conversion rate, he had a more positive day than quite a few on the pitch.

Youri Tielemans- 6

It was a quiet day for the Villa number eight who didn’t really get into the game playing in the hole behind Watkins. Tielemans did manage to create two chances on the day but his teammates failed to take advantage.

Ollie Watkins- 8

A double for the England international should have been enough to secure all three points but some poor defending didn’t help Watkins. He won the most duels in the match with seven and scored two from just 0.46 xG, a superb poacher’s performance.
