Aston Villa set to sign Jhon Edwin Montano, he will move to Villa Park

Aston Villa may have found themselves a ready-made successor to Leon Bailey already, with a young Colombian forward reportedly ready to sign for Unai Emery’s side.

The Villans are set to complete the transfer of Independiente Medellin winger Jhon Edwin Montano, with the player’s representatives said to have confirmed a move to Argentina-based journalist Cesar Mosquera.

Bailey’s eight Premier League goals this season have helped fire Villa into the Champions League places, and 17-year-old Montano could be seen as someone who can take up the Jamaican’s mantle in the future as Emery looks to build a squad capable of challenging at Europe’s highest level.

Posting on X, Mosquera confirmed the news, saying: “From those around the Colombian winger Jhon Edwin Montano, they assure me that Aston Villa will offer for the DIM player. It is a fact that he will be part of the club. Montano will join Villa, confirmed.”

Montano arrival will bolster impressive forward stocks at Villa Park

The emergence of Bailey as one of Villa’s, and the Premier League’s, most dangerous attacking weapons has played a massive role in the club’s march up the table into firm Champions League contention.

Signed as one-third of the trio brought in following the £100million sale of Jack Grealish to Manchester City, Bailey only managed six goals in his first 54 appearances for the club, but in 2023-24 has already netted 12 times in all competitions.

With Bailey, Emi Buendia, Moussa Diaby and Morgan Rogers all fighting it out for a place on Villa’s flanks next season, Montano will be a long way back in the pecking order upon his arrival.

However, if he can build on his promising showings for Independiente Medellin’s youth sides, and emulate the rise of Bailey this season, don’t be surprised to see Montano eventually become a fixture of Emery’s Champions League-bound side.

If he can follow Bailey’s rise from the very bottom to the top, Montano is going to be special.

In other Aston Villa news, Ally McCoist was delighted with Montano’s namesake Jhon Duran after his performance against Manchester City.
