Aston Villa: Emi Martinez ‘absolutely bang on’ after what goalkeeper told radio show

Emi Martinez just “gets it”, according to Ty Bracey, after comments from the Aston Villa goalkeeper about the prospect of playing with them in the Champions League.

Speaking with DSports Radio the 31-year-old has admitted that achieving top four with the Villans would mean more than if he transferred to it.

On that, Martinez said: “We are in the Champions League positions and in the quarter-finals of a European competition. The club hasn’t qualified for the Champions League for 45 years, so entering the Champions League would be like winning a title.

“It’s very good because it’s easy too jump to a giant club and play in the Champions League. But playing in the Champions League with a club which nobody expects to be there – the merit for me is a little more.”

This has left plenty of Villa fans happy, including Bracey. Consistent rumours have linked the Argentine away from the club. He has been linked to giants like Bayern Munich in the past year [The Sun].

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bracey said: “He gets it from the fans’ side as well which is massive. It’s important that the team understand that and he gets it. His statement was absolutely bang on. We haven’t qualified for the Champions League for 45 years and he’s been with us since we’ve come back up and we stayed up on the final day of the season and he’s been part of that journey with us.

From a footballing standpoint, I completely get it. Of course, you can jump at another club who get Champions League every year but to be part of a team building that Champions League squad, yeah that statement was bang on from him. I expect nothing less for something like that to come from Emi Martinez.”

What impact has Emi Martinez had on Aston Villa?

Ever since signing for the Villans in 2020 for £17m [BBC] he has been a fan favourite and a superb addition to the side.

This all started with a penalty save on his debut against Sheffield United and has only gone on to get better from there.

In four years he has kept 44 clean sheets [Premier League] and has the possibility to keep more with another seven league games remaining.
