Aston Villa: Dan Bardell reacts to what Mark Bosnich said about Ollie Watkins
Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins is the best forward in the Premier League at this moment in time after what Mark Bosnich said, according to Dan Bardell.
The former Villa keeper went one step further with his praise for the England international, claiming he is currently the best player in the division in an interview with Sky Sports on 4 March.
The Australian believes the 16 goals and 10 assists the 28-year-old has registered this season puts him ahead of his top-flight competitors.
Bardell has been impressed by Watkins’s performances since Unai Emery arrived at Villa Park, adding that he’s pleased to see some of the Villans fans’ “absolutely ludicrous” comments about whether or not he’s good enough for the club have now been put to bed.
Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “I think on form he’s probably the best forward in the league at the moment.
“I think Phil Foden might have something to say about whether he’s the best player in the Premier League at the moment across the entirety of the league.
“But he’s certainly the most in-form forward and, if you look at the body of work over the last 12 months, I don’t think there have been too many people that have been better than him.
“There have been Villa fans over the last 12 months who still think Villa could do better than Ollie Watkins, which I have always felt was absolutely ridiculous.
“I think that’s been completely put to bed now, I’ve not seen that stuff on social media anymore, which I’m glad about because I thought it was absolutely ludicrous.
“Watkins is the perfect striker for Villa and for Unai Emery. This time next year, we’re going to be talking about him being Villa’s record Premier League goalscorer.”
Is Ollie Watkins best player in Premier League amid Aston Villa form?
There is certainly an argument to suggest Watkins has been the best player in the Premier League this season after improving several aspects of his game.
As Bardell points out, Phil Foden may have something to say about that, but it will be pleasing for Villa fans to see one of their players being in that conversation.
There is no doubt his goal contributions are going to be hugely important for Emery’s side over the next few weeks as they look to secure their place in the top four and lift the Europa Conference League trophy.
