Aston Villa PSR admission shared as Morgan Sanson closes on £4m Villa Park exit

Aston Villa selling Morgan Sanson to Nice would be good business for the club after a development has emerged, according to Dan Bardell.

The Birmingham Mail reported on its website on 8 March that the French club are close to triggering the £4million option-to-buy clause as part of the 29-year-old’s loan deal.

The French attacking midfielder has scored two goals and laid on three assists in 27 appearances during his time away from Villa Park this season.

Bardell believes every bit of money Villa can get in from player sales will help due to the profit and sustainability (PSR) restrictions surrounding them at this moment in time.

Speaking exclusively to Villa News, Bardell said: “It would be good to get those wages off the books and get some kind of fee for him. Every bit of money helps at the moment with the PSR restrictions.

“It’s just a signing that didn’t work. It can happen, not every club seem to get every transfer right, except for Brighton, who just seem to be miraculous in the way they do things.

“It’s one that you have to chalk off and write off. I thought it was a strange signing at the time. I didn’t really feel like that was a position Villa massively needed to strengthen. It’s just never worked out.

“If he’s played no football under three different managers, none of them have taken a shine to him and none of them have felt that he warrants a place in the team or the squad at times, then you have to look at the player or say he’s not cut out for the Premier League.

“If he had anything about him, one of those managers would have identified that there was something worth keeping him around for and none of them have.

“At the end of the day, I trust Unai Emery with my life and he’s decided he’s not good enough after having a look at him.

“Even for Villa to get £4million back for him, I think that would be decent business for them.”

Morgan Sanson heading for permanent Aston Villa exit

It’s been a really disappointing spell for Sanson at Villa since he joined the club from Marseille in 2021, having scored just one goal in 23 appearances.

As Bardell points out, it’s probably down to the player that his move hasn’t worked out after Dean Smith, Steven Gerrard and Unai Emery have all decided he isn’t good enough.

The club will probably just be happy to cut their losses and move on from the situation as his permanent exit from Villa Park now looks to be edging closer.
