Aston Villa former employee shares ‘positive’ Mario Hermoso verdict as transfer news emerges

Aston Villa would be making a “positive signing” if they brought Atletico Madrid defender Mario Hermoso to Villa Park.

That is according to former Villa scout Bryan King, who shared the verdict after Calciomercato reported on Monday (11 March) that the Midlands club are in pole position to land his signature.

The publication reported that the centre-back would be a free agent as his contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

Speaking to Villa News, King said: “Emery is going to know the player and he’s playing for a big club, so it can only be a positive signing, especially if it’s on a free.

“Villa got caught out badly at the back against Tottenham, balls played in behind full-backs, balls into the channel.

“They were all over the place. Giving the ball away, losing possession of the ball in their own half. At the end of the day, they were lucky they didn’t get beat 6-0.”

Do Aston Villa need defensive reinforcements?

Unai Emery has certainly strengthened his defence since his arrival at Villa Park, with Pau Torres joining from Villarreal last summer.

The Midlands outfit have been severely impacted by injuries in central defence, with Torres, Tyrone Mings and Diego Carlos among the players to have been sidelined this season.

The Villa defence came up very short earlier this month at home to Tottenham Hotspur, with the North London outfit running out 4-0 winners.
