John McGinn captaincy at Aston Villa discussed as Ezri Konsa footage emerges
Aston Villa star John McGinn will not be stripped of his captaincy, despite footage emerging of an interaction with Ezri Konsa following his sending-off against Tottenham, according to Alan Hutton.
McGinn was shown the first red card of his Villa career as Unai Emery’s side lost 4-0 to Spurs on Sunday (10 March) as the Scottish international rushed across the pitch before colliding with Destiny Udogie midway through the second half.
After a bit of a confrontation between the two sides in Spurs’ technical area, Konsa was spotted on Sky Sports coverage gesturing towards McGinn to suggest that the Villa skipper had lost his head at a crucial time in the season.
While Hutton has been impressed by the versatile defender’s leadership this season, he doesn’t think the 27-year-old is in line to take over the Villa captaincy and expects Emery to stick with the Scotsman for the remainder of the season.
“Probably, he’s been there for a number of years now,” Hutton told Villa News.
“He’s almost an ever-present when he’s fit and he’s very good within the dressing room. I don’t think it’s ever going to get taken off John if I’m honest, unless he was to leave.
“I think what he does is even more than Konsa. Of course, there are leadership qualities within the Konsa.”
Will John McGinn face the Aston Villa axe after red card v Tottenham?
As Hutton suggested, Emery is unlikely to axe McGinn as Villa captain because of one rush of blood against Tottenham, but it is positive to see that the Villans have so many leaders littered throughout their squad.

Douglas Luiz has led with his performances in midfield, and Ollie Watkins’ goals at the top end of the pitch have helped Villa climb up the table all while Unai Martinez and Pau Torres have helped Emery’s side from the back.
While it will be a huge blow to lose McGinn for the next three Premier League matches, Emery now has the players in his team to be able to guide his side through the next few weeks of action.
With matches against Ajax, West Ham United, Wolves and Manchester City on the horizon the next few weeks could potentially be season-defining for the Villans and they cannot afford to let their standards slip.
