Aston Villa Women star Adriana Leon can save Carla Ward’s season after international award
Aston Villa Women have really underperformed under manager Carla Ward this season, with the Midlands club nowhere near their best.
They currently sit in eighth place in the Women’s Super League (WSL) table, with just five wins from their 15 matches so far.
Given the issues of the clubs below them, Villa Women are safe in the current position, but are some way away from a strong league finish.
Their season could, however, be saved once star player Adriana Leon returns from international action. The Canada international recently fired her country to the semi-finals of the inaugural edition of the CONCACAF Women’s Gold Cup.
And her efforts in front of goal have now been recognised, with the forward picking up the Golden Boot award after banging in six goals in five matches [official Aston Villa website, 11 March].
Aston Villa Women star Adriana Leon in superb form for Canada
The superb scoring run began with five goals from the opening two matches against El Salvador and Paraguay, with another arriving in the semi-final defeat to the USA.
It is a fantastic achievement from the Canada international, who will now be full of confidence as Villa Women look to climb the WSL table.
Fortunately, Ward and her players can now focus all of their efforts on doing just that after being knocked out of the Continental Cup by Arsenal earlier this month.

Leon will be keen to add to her WSL goals tally of four this season, with her teammate Rachel Daly ahead of her in the standings thanks to her six strikes.
